The vertical format has always be in my blood as I read and write in Chinese.
I intend to describe my view towards something invisible, like spirit, like energy. I am looking up to Chinese aesthetic concept in ShanShui that is leaded by the blank leaving approach, which is the aesthetic that I am familiar and relate. In my setting of the hanging scroll, the ‘river’ is formed by the negative space of all the brass blocks, crossing the centre of the painting. Having spirituality as my approach this time, I am looking back to my route in term of tradition practises as well the ideology and value.
The incomplete scroll has to do with my view towards spirituality as an old practise that is unearthed again, as well my incomplete understanding to the practises as a Malaysian Chinese who has a complex route.
